Coconut oil, or copra oil, is an edible oil extracted from the kernel or meat of mature coconuts harvested from the coconut palm.

The fruit’s oil is predominantly made up of saturated fats with a high amount of medium chain fatty acids, with a good percentage of the fatty acid being lauric acid. It contains vitamin E, which is known to protect the skin from free radical damage.

Widely used in skin creams, soaps and lotions for its effectiveness in fighting dry skin, coconut oil also helps to sooth various other types of skin conditions:

Moisturises

Coconut oil is a powerful moisturizer that is beneficial to restoring dry or flaking skin. Unlike your average moisturizer that contains a lot of water and likely synthetic ingredients, coconut oil helps to strengthen skin tissue more deeply and eliminate dead skin cells while absorbing quickly into your skin.

However, if your skin is drier than sandpaper, it’s always best to use coconut products with a water base first.

Is Anti Ageing

Collagen, a structural protein in the inner layers of skin, is what keeps the skin elastic and smooth. It may breakdown due to the effect of UV rays, pollution, smoking, and physical injuries. Replacement of collagen is necessary to counteract the effects of its breakdown.

It has been found that coconut oil has the ability to penetrate deep into the skin. The triglycerides in the oil attract protein molecules, ensuring timely repair of the collagen layer.

Is Antiviral

The Vitamin E found in coconut oil soothes eczema, sunburn and psoriasis, and its antiviral and antifungal benefits even help to treat bug bites.

Coconut oil contains 3 fatty acids: capric acid, lauric acid and caprylic acid. Each of these acids kill candida, a common cause of fungal infection on your skin.

Cleanses and Tones Skin

It is a fantastic makeup remover – and even works on waterproof mascara!

The light, spreading texture of coconut oil enables it to seep into the hair follicles and dissolve the hardened sebum, bringing it up to the skin surface.

Reduces Acne

The fatty acids in coconut oil help it to work as an anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial natural product. This works in favor of reducing acne breakouts and keeping the pores dirt-free.

Coconut oil helps to soothe inflammation that often accompanies severe acne, and helps to alleviate the red dry skin that acne can cause. The vitamin E can help to fight damage to the skin thanks to its powerful antioxidant properties.
